How's Life?

Life, hmmm. Lets see.... It's going pretty good. I have been pretty busy between work and school. That seems to take up most of my life. Some of the other big things in my life right now is moving. I currently am moving into a new house. It is located close to campus. It is also a big step for me because I am moving in with my boyfriend. We have talked about it a lot and have decided to go for it. And it's not like I just met him we have been together for over three years. Anyways I'm excited about that. I will be moving in with him and three other roommates. So there will be five of us all together. This will also be my first moving out of my parents house experience...
Other than that life has been pretty much the same. Can't really complain. Oh some of the interesting things I do besides school and work are, disc golfing, Hort Club, volunteering at the Student Organic Farm, and just hanging out with friends. Anyways thats life for me. Thanks for listening...

Changing as a writer

This class has taught me a lot about writing and who I am as a writer. It gave me a chance to be creative and work on aspects I was not to good at. Going back and reading my first blog I have realized some of the things I said before aren't true now. This class was educating and fun, I learned a lot of different things. Some of them may be random, but a lot of them I can use towards future writing.
Before this class I think I had only written maybe one blog, through like myspace or something. I am not to much of a blogger. I think I would do it if I had something really interesting to tell people, and I wasn't busy. But it is not something I would do on a daily basis. To tell you the truth I don't really think I will be blogging to much after this class ends. Although I do not miss doing it. It allows you to express your opinions without arguing or feedback. You can just say what you wanna say.I like blogs for that fact. They just aren't my cup of tea.
Anyways I had a good time in this class over the semester. This semester in general went really well. I ended up doing good in all of my classes. Also I am excited for next semester I get to take some interesting classes like veggie production. How cool.
And to end this and the semester I want to say, thank you Franny for being such a awsome teacher!!!! I hope to see you around!!!

Green year round

When I began my project I wanted to do something that had to do with greenhouses. I was interested in the ways they worked and the new technologies they are incorporated. As i started asking more questions I realized that I also wanted to touch on the flaws of the technology also. I learned that technologies that might be helpful in one area can hinder another. I also learned that different areas in the world have more advanced technology that others. Also that different areas in the world have different technologies because of temp and other environmental factors. So my topic now is going to incorporate where what technologies are being used and why. Also I would like to be able to research the high tech greenhouses of the Netherlands and see what they used compared to moderate greenhouses.

I have had personal experience working in a greenhouse and have visited a few. I was really interesting to see the differences and the new technology that was there. Some of the things that stuck out the most was the irrigation systems and heating systems. In some one of the greenhouses I visited they did all flood irrigation, in another there was drip irrigation. Also the greenhouse with flood irrigation also did heating through the floor. I thought that was interesting. I also remember them talking about the light quality that comes through the glass and having to clean it often. That made me wonder if there were different materials you could use that would affect the light quality or insulation.

Conversation between Dr. Beirnbaum (B) and myself (E)

B: So what are you most interested in about greenhouses?
E: Well I want to learn about the different technologies used in greenhouses, one thing that particularly peeks my interest is the irrigation systems used and what ones are more efficient.
B: So what do you know about irrigation systems so far?
E: Well I know there are several different kinds of irrigation. I know of flood irrigation, drip irrigation, hand watering. And although you might have an irrigation system set up, you still may have to hand water some plants depending on how much water they need.
B: Are there other greenhouse technologies your interested in?
E: Yes, there are the heating and cooling systems used, air ventilation, different types of materials to use for glass/ plastics.

The most important thing I have learned and other people should learn is that greenhouses can grow year round crops and various plants. This is made possible through different technologies. The technologies and things needed (heat, air flow, irrigation) to grow year round agriculture vary depending on locations. The technologies are important to the survival of the crops. Therefore I would like to know more about the technologies used in greenhouses.

Stckers

The sticker I choose is NATURE IS PISSED. I chose this because I find it funny, but also true. We are not that conscious of nature, therefore we do not really take care of it.So nature is pissed, I would be too. And we know this because of global warming, lol. It is natures way of getting back at us. So are the all the natural disasters, tornadoes and hurricanes. All showing that nature is pissed.
I find this funny because nature can't really be pissed but if it had emotions I'm sure it would be. I think it symbolizes that we should all be a little better to nature. Make sure we recycle and conserve. Their are a lot of things we can do as individuals to help. Even little things that you don't think will even matter. It will all add up in the end, even if it doesn't seem like a big deal at the time.
Nature is pissed is a good way of saying that we need to take better care of our world. And that at the rate we are going now things are not getting any better. Nature is pissed at us for taking advantage of it and not really realizing what its worth. We need it to survive and it plays vital roles in our life. So if it is that important you think we would take better care of it. But we take it for granted! Forests will not always be there if we cut them all down.If the climate changes habitats change too, making it devastating to plants that cannot relocate themselves. So this sticker brings about attention to the earth and nature. Bringing people to think about how we treat our environments, and what we can do to change things.

Googleing Myself

When I googled my name I didnt find anything about myself. What showed up was a romance novelist, falowed by some other people on facebook and twitter who are not me. There was alot on the romance novelist apparently she has wrote alot of books. It showed me pictures of her and of covers of her books. It is interesting googling peoples names. You get the most random stuff sometimes. It is kool to know that there are other people out there with the same name as me.I was suprised to see that so many things came up and none of it was about me, lol. I guess that is kind of a good thing. Well google has everything.... except for this Emily, haha!

Looking for information

Part 1- The most recent time I looked for information was last night. I went to google. I always go to google to find random information. Google has everything! Well anyways what I looked up was a certain kind synthetic fertilizer. I was looking this up for an experiment I have to do for plant biology. When I looked up the fertilizer I found all kinds of information. I found out what was in it and the percentages of those. Also I found out how much of the fertilizer you are supposed to apply to an acre of land. I also found a bunch of irrelevant sites.
Part 2- I have done plenty of research for projects in school. What I listed above was for research for a project in plant biology on comparing synthetic and organic fertilizers. Again I went to find information from google. I found the information that was needed and much much more. This isn't always the case though. I have had trouble looking up information in the past.
Part 3- I think I might have cheated seeing as how both experiences from part 1 and part 2 are the same... But yes they are research. I would consider looking something up research, even if it is just for fun though. I can research Halloween costumes if I want.....

Video games

Before this class I had no clue what machinimas were. I didn't even know that people really made videos from video games. Now I know it is a whole other part to the video game industry. And actually they are pretty entertaining. The machinimas we watched in class were pretty comical. Although I do not really play Halo, I found them entertaining and interesting. I had a vulgar comedy and made the boring parts in the game more interesting. Although the machinimas were cool, i don't really play video games that often, so they aren't something I would watch on my own time. Although I am always open and interested in something new. I would not mind watching more of these.

Using Technology

Technology is a big part of my life, I use it every day. Even though some technologies are made for a specific purpose they can be used for different functions. One of the biggest examples I have of this instance is with my cell phone. I use my cell phone on a daily basis. Most the time i am using for the purpose with which it was created, to call people. But I also use it a lot to play music. My phone was not created for that but it works! My phone turns into my portable music player all the time. I can use headphones or play the music through the speakers of my phone, which surprisingly work really good. I have gotten a memory card for my phone so it can hold more songs. Making the possibilities unlimited. I now have tons of songs on my phone, and it usually comes with me where ever I go. So not only is it a phone it is a Mp3 player. So even tough my phone was meant for communication with other people, I use it as a music player also. It is very helpful and useful.

Ideas for project #2

Well lets see a couple of things have crossed my mind about what I would want to do for my project. I really like how I have a freedom to do something i think will be fun. One of my ideas was to maybe do a collage with different pictures. but that doesn't seem like i would be able to get my message across. I really like the idea of making a YouTube video. I already have a YouTube account and some videos. So i think I will do that. Yup, a music video on music technology in my life. That sounds like a good idea. It would be fun to be able to record me singing or playing the violin and add some pictures of the music influences mentioned in my paper. I'm really not sure who my audience is going to be. I could make the audience of other music players (instruments or singing). This is something I will have to develop more in the weeks to come.

The coolest thing I've ever made...

Well, lets see...
There are a couple of things that come to mind when I think about things I've made or created. One of my favorite projects was making a bird house with my dad. This happened a long time ago, but the birdhouse still stands today. We made the birdhouse out of wood and put a sheet of metal over the top to keep the wood from rotting. Anyways It was way cooler than the projects i had to make in industrial arts.

The coolest thing I've ever made doesn't really have a lot to do with writing, and it definitely wasn't writing. I'm not really sure how it would relate to writing. The way building a bird house might relate to writing is that it will have invention strategies, different ways of making the birdhouse. There could also be a specific style to the birdhouse, like being fancy (which ours was not). Also just like writing my birdhouse has a specific audience, birds.

Writing is a way to express your thoughts on paper. It is not just "to trace or form (characters, letters, words, etc.) on the surface of some material, as with a pen, pencil, or other instrument"
even though that is a key part to writing. Writing means a lot of things, it is a different way to portray your ideas and communicate. "writing is speech put into a visible form"- Elizabeth Boone Hill.

Reflection

I liked writing about music technology, because music plays a big part in my life. Even though I do not know much about the technology we use to listen to it, I figured out that it is very important to me and has shaped who I am today. the experience I had writing it was really reminiscent. It was like going back in time to the most vivid memories I had of music and what I used to listen to it. I enjoyed doing that and being able to share my experiences with someone else. The one thing I wish I could have touched on more is the technology used in playing music and the new technologies they have came out with for recording music. I didn't want my paper to be all over the place though so I just stuck with the things we use to listen to music. I really hope I did well on this assignment. I fear that I might have not made the reason why I was writing it clear enough. I also wanted to make the point that writing the essay helped me to realize how much listening to music, and the technology we use to do it has greatly influenced my life. I'm worried that I might not have gone into enough detail about those subjects. But I think I did really well at telling the story of how music technology evolved though my lifetime. I also think I did well at describing my experiences with listening to music and what I used at the time to do so.

Gender and technology

Um, lets start off with saying I'm a female. And while I work as a waitress which is predominately female job, it really doesn't have much to do with technology. Although I am very capable of using the technology at my work, so is everyone else. So even though I haven't had many issues with technology. I have witnessed people generalized by their gender at what they can do. My mother works as a secretary to Smith Floral, and while she is not the only secretary there, they all seem to be female. My friend Anna who is in the secretarial field and who has works with a number of companies usually works with girl secretaries. My father owns and runs Action Appliance Company, he has done this since I was born. And from since I can remember all the secretaries he has ever had were women also. While those are things I've witnessed there are other things I've noticed. Whenever I need computer help there always seems to be a guy there to do the job. My dad has gotten his computers fixed a couple of times, and not once have a seen a female there to do it. And when I took my computer to the Geek Squad to get fixed there were about five guys there to help. One personal realization I have come to, is when it comes to the creative aspect of using computers like power points or reports women seem to dominate. When it comes to the technical aspect of computers men seem to dominate.

I like reading more than writing

I read a lot! I think it comes from my mom. For as long as I can remember my mother has been a very avid reader. I remember being a little kid and seeing all of her books, there were so many of them! She reads a book like every two days. While I might not read as much as my mom, we read the same type of books, science-fiction and fantasy. I have actually read a lot of the books my mom has. Anyways I don't mind writing as long as it is something I am interested in. But I love reading books! I have read many series and beyond. Yes i have read the Twilight series, and i loved it. I also really liked the Host (also by Stephanie Meyer). I just got done reading a trilogy called the guardians of time, it was pretty good and a easy read. But I am always open to new material if anyone has any suggestions.... Usually in my spare time instead of watching TV or playing on the computer I will pick up a book and read. When it is nice out, like it has been the last couple of days, I like to sit outside or go to the park and read. Even though I read a lot doesn't mean I don't do other things. I still have a myspace and facebook, but I don't get on them to often, I use my computer mostly for school. Overall I would much rather read an article then write one.

Technology scares me.....

Alright, lets just start out by saying, technology has worked its way into just about every aspect of my life. There are many reasons why it scares me though. The first I would have to say is that I don't fully understand it. Lets face it some things on my computer I just don't get, even on my digital camera! But I have a basic knowledge and can use both to the extent that I need them. I have a certain comfort zone with my computer because I don't want to mess anything up. And if something did mess up I probably wouldn't know how to fix it... Anyways, back to the point technology scares me. I think the biggest reason why it scares me though is because it is such a big part of everything (EVERYTHING!). I don't know what I would do if I was told that I couldn't use any technology, even for just one day. No phone, no car, no computer even just those three things put me at a loss. The scariest thought about technology is that it is taking over, pretty soon most jobs wont even need employees just computers ( and a guy to fix the computers if they break). It is a scary thought to think that computers are basically what a lot of things rely on to run smoothly. Soon they might just take over the world.
